Women are more likely than men to experience knee pain, and other risk factors such as age, weight, overexertion, and tobacco use can all contribute to the growing population of people who experience this potentially debilitating condition. Shoulder Pain

The shoulder is one of the most complex joints in the human body. It is a “ball and socket” joint, meaning that it can move in any direction. In fact, it is considered to be the most mobile joint in the body, which is helpful given the wide range of activities we need our arms for! However, because it is so mobile, it is not a very stable joint, which makes it highly susceptible to injury. For this reason, shoulder pain is a very common condition that is treated by our doctors at the Springfield Wellness Center.

When a woman carries a growing and developing child in her uterus, her body is constantly adapting to accommodate these changes. While the body is smart and knows what to do, these changes are often very difficult to endure for the mother-to-be. Add to that the fact that pregnancy is around 9 months long and you have a bonafide journey that a woman must endure in order to safely bring her little one into the world. Despite the challenges, though, it is a worthwhile and life-changing experience that culminates in the birth of new life, which should be celebrated!

Plantar Fasciitis

Plantar fasciitis is a painful condition that is due to inflammation of the plantar fascia on the bottom of the foot. While 75% of the population experiences foot pain at some point in their life, only 10% experiences plantar fasciitis and the discomfort that it brings. To better understand the condition itself, it is important to first understand the anatomy of the foot and how that plays a role. The bottom of the foot contains 3 arches: the medial, the lateral longitudinal, and the transverse. The 3 of these form a triangle of sorts, and their purpose is to provide shock absorption for the body to protect against the force that is transmitted through the feet with each movement. After all, the average American takes about 4000 steps per day, with people who are more active taking 7000-10,000 steps per day. That’s a lot of force for the feet to handle!

Scoliosis

When you look at a spine from the side, you will notice three distinct curves are present: a cervical curve (neck), a thoracic curve (upper and middle back), and a lumbar curve (lower back). These curves are normal and healthy, as they allow the spine to act like a shock-absorbing spring protecting against the constant array of forces placed on the spine through everyday life. When you look at a spine from the front or back, it should appear as a straight line up and down. When side-to-side curvatures are present in this view, this is called scoliosis.

Neuropathy

Neuropathy is one of the most common nervous system conditions. In fact, over 20 million Americans suffer from neuropathy today, and the number continues to increase. Pinched Nerve

The nervous system is the master system of the human body. Without it, no other part of the body can perform the function that it needs to. Your heart can’t beat, your lungs can’t breathe, and your muscles can’t move. Simply put, we cannot be alive without a nervous system. The way the body works is the brain acts as the “computer”, telling everything in the body what to do and how to do it. The only way it can do that is by sending signals down the spinal cord and through the nerves of the body. These nerves deliver those messages to different parts of the body and relay information back to the brain. Any disruption of these communication lines can affect how these signals are transmitted and thus compromise that part’s ability to function. This is what can happen when there is a pinched nerve.

Carpal Tunnel

The upper extremity is one of the most incredible parts of the human body. The amount of different types of movements, from small, delicate movements to large, forceful movements that it performs is almost overwhelming.

Only when we experience an injury or dysfunction in the upper extremity do we really get a sense of just how much we depend on this vital structure. This is no more true than with the hand and wrist, which provide a near-infinite amount of fine motor movements and provide our brain and nervous system with an endless supply of sensory information.

Hip Pain

You will rarely hear about a hip joint completely dislocating – it would take an extraordinary trauma like a car accident to cause that. This is a stark contrast to the shoulder joint, which is much less stable and more commonly can be dislocated. However, the hip joint can still come out of its normal alignment, and this can affect the overall function of the joint. If the hip joint becomes misaligned, it can have a drastic effect on how our body bears weight and cause imbalances that can lead to issues in the hips, knees, and ankles. The hip joints bear a tremendous amount of weight, so it is vital that the weight is evenly distributed through both joints.

Posture

As chiropractors, our mission is to help people live the healthiest lives they can live. To live a healthy life, it is essential to have a healthy nervous system, the master system of the human body that controls all other bodily functions. The only way that the nervous system can function at its truly optimal level is to be free of stress, and this can only be achieved through healthy alignment, posture, and movement of the spine. Posture is the “window” to the spine, meaning you can tell how healthy someone’s spine is just by looking at their posture. When the spine is in good posture, the spinal cord and attached nerves are completely relaxed and can have clear communication to the brain and out to the rest of the body. This allows for an optimally healthy life.

Arthritis

Arthritis is one of the most common musculoskeletal disorders in the world. In the U.S., close to 1 in 4 adults have been diagnosed with some type of arthritis. It tends to affect females more than males; however, lifestyle factors play a significant role in its prevalence. Generally speaking, if you are in good health and exercise regularly, your chances of developing arthritis are much lower, especially for developing it earlier in life. Age also plays a role; the older you get, the more likely you will develop arthritis or that the arthritis you do have will progressively worsen.

Elbow Pain

The elbow joint is a complex joint, technically, it’s two joints in one. Where the humerus meets the radius and humerus meets the ulna forms this joint that performs flexion and extension but also contributes to rotation of the forearm both internally and externally. It is also the location for many important muscle and tendon attachments, particularly the muscles in our forearm responsible for moving our fingers and hands. Because of the vast amount and variety of movements these muscles perform, overuse and repetitive movements are the #1 cause of elbow pain.

SI Joint Pain

If you have ever felt your lower back with your hands, you may have noticed a dimple on both sides in the lower portion of the lower back just above the buttock region. This dimple is the location of the sacroiliac joints, otherwise known as the SI joints. These joints are formed by the union of the sacrum, which is the base of the spine, and the ilium, which is one of three bones that make up the pelvic girdle. The joint itself is one of the largest in the body, sometimes spanning three to four inches long.
